Director of Pharmacy

Cardinal Health manages the pharmacy at Marshall Medical Center South located in Boaz, AL. The director of pharmacy is responsible for overseeing all medication storage and preparation in the health system or organization. The director of pharmacy ensures that the pharmacy provides optimal services; meets all legal, accreditation, and certification requirements; and complies with all applicable policies, procedures, codes, and standards of the organization.

Accountabilities

  • Develops and enforces policies and procedures that promote cost-effective, appropriate, and safe medication use.
  • Develops and maintains a medical staff-approved formulary.
  • Supervises medication storage and preparation areas throughout the facility.
  • Provides for the educational needs of health care professionals, patients, and their families.
  • Ensures maintenance of an adequate medication supply. Ensures the integrity of the medication supply. Establishes specifications for the procurement of medications, chemicals, and biologicals.
  • Ensures strict control and accountability for medications dispensed to patients or distributed to floor stock.
  • Assures adequate control and documentation of controlled substances.
  • Ensures applicable continuing education records and licensure are maintained in department files.
  • Supervises all pharmacy personnel and recruits, interviews, promotes, disciplines, and terminates pharmacy staff.
  • Develops job descriptions and performance standards. Evaluates and counsels staff on their performance.
  • Prepares work schedules and monitors workload statistics. Maintains an appropriate staffing level.
  • Provides for the educational needs of the pharmacy staff.
  • Prepares a pharmacy budget annually.
  • Reviews monthly financial statistics and plans expenditures within budget guidelines.
  • Monitors and justifies all expenses exceeding budgeted targets.
  • Ensures preparation and submission of patient charges and financial reports to administration in accordance with policy.
  • Administers reports, documents, payroll records, statistical surveys, and other required data.
  • Ensures compliance with health system policies and procedures that apply to pharmacy services.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Graduate of an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy with a BS Pharmacy degree or higher.
  • Must be a “good standing” licensed Pharmacist and/or eligible for licensure in the state of Alabama.
  • Experience in at least one of the following environments: hospital, inpatient, clinical, LTAC, rehab OR completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency.
  • Management experience highly preferred.
  • Oncology experience preferred.
  • 340B experience preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organization, presentation and leadership skills.
  • Proven customer service skills.
  • Ability to work on call or be in an on call rotation.

    Summary

    Provide pharmaceutical care services to the patients including, but not limited to oversight, monitoring, preparation, dispensing and proper documentation of patient medication therapy as well as providing drug information, patient information and oversight of information and dispensing systems. Additionally: ensures compliance with Federal, State, and local laws and regulations. May also advise physicians on medication utilization.

    Responsibilities

    This individual’s responsibilities include (but are not limited to): Review and monitor patient's medication therapy and orders written for safety and efficacy considering specific patient conditions and health status; advise patient care team on patient's medication therapy and document such interventions. Order verification and performing medication profile reviews that should include but not limited to checking for duplications, drug- drug and drug-food interactions, allergies, drug appropriateness, dosing, and frequency. Prepare, label, and dispense medications for patients in accordance with physicians' prescriptions; ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local laws and regulations pertaining to the dispensing of drugs and narcotics and the maintenance of required records. Check High Risk IVs, renal dose adjusting medications, IV to PO conversions, initiates/modifies/ discontinues therapy, and mediates black box warning interventions. Ensure that appropriate medications are available for patients and properly procured, prepared, stored, and maintained. Supervise the preparation, maintenance, and dispensing process of drugs and supplies, including technical personnel performing these functions. Maintain relationships with medical and nursing staff; provide timely information pertaining to pharmaceutical supplies, drug usage and compatibility, state and federal regulations regarding drug controls, and Joint Commission standards. Provide for collaborative practice management as per facility-approved protocols for anticoagulation, parenteral nutrition, vancomycin, and aminoglycoside consults, etc. Assist with medication reconciliation and clarification of unsafe and unclear drug therapy orders. Provide education to patients on the use of medications as needed. Participate in the education and training of healthcare professionals (e.g. physicians, nurses, pharmacy technicians, and students) in relation to medication use. Demonstrate regulatory compliance as evidenced by timely completion of nursing unit inspections, as needed. Maintain professional competence with pharmacy department and state licensing requirements via staff development, independent study, and/or professional activities.

    • B.S. or Pharm D. from an accredited college of Pharmacy.

    • Pharmacy license; BLS within 30 days of hire (ACLS and/or PALS if code attendance required

    Job Description:

    Pharmacy Clinical Manager

    Full time - Day Shift

    As a member of the pharmacy management team, the clinical pharmacy manager drives the highest level of quality and clinical competency in the pharmacy department staff. Facilitates the development, implementation, and maintenance of systems, procedures and protocols that promote desirable patient outcomes through the use of safe and cost-effective drug therapies. Coordinates clinical pharmacy services and programs and participates in multi-disciplinary committees and projects to collaborate on pharmacy clinical issues throughout the hospital. Supervises clinical and staff pharmacist positions and coordinates the clinical pharmacy activities for the health care system. Coordinates the activities of the P&T committee; develops metrics to meet clinical regulatory requirements; works in conjunction with other clinical pharmacy resources across the integrated system of care. Responsible for process improvement related to clinical direction of the department, setting expectations and holding staff accountable for performance metrics related to clinical initiatives. The clinical manager also serves as the Residency Program Director for the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program as well as a preceptor for IPPE/ APPE students in the Health System Rotation.

    Qualifications:

      • Minimum Education
        • Doctor of Pharmacy from ACPE accredited school of pharmacy
      • Minimum Experience
        • Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency followed by a minimum of three years of pharmacy practice experience; or Completion of ASHP-accredited PGY1 and PGY2 residencies with one or more years of pharmacy practice experience; or Without completion of an ASHP-accredited residency, have five or more years of pharmacy practice experience.
      • Required Registration/License/Certification
        • Active and clear Registered Pharmacist License and Controlled Substances Permit issued by the State of Alabama, Board Certification from Board of Pharmacy Specialties.
